Listing historyCultural mentionsNotable events

Revenue's renewed-liquor-licence register lists licence ref LET001 as a Publican's Licence (ordinary) - Theatre for AN GRIANAN THEATRE at PORT ROAD, LETTERKENNY in CO. DONEGAL with LETTERKENNY THEATRE MANAGEMENT CO LIMITED as licensee.[1]

Irish Times coverage before opening said An Grianan Theatre was due to open in October 1999 as a GBP3m state-of-the-art Letterkenny facility with a 350-seat auditorium, rehearsal hall, workshop space, and one of the largest stages of any theatre in Ireland.[2] The same report said half of the building cost came from the EU through the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, while Donegal County Council provided GBP1.4m.[2] In 2002, Irish Times coverage of a new An Grianan production of Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa said the Letterkenny theatre had been building a reputation as a Donegal production house over its first three years.[3]
