NIAH records Smock Alley Theatre at 6-7 Exchange Street Lower and Essex Street West as a regionally rated former Church of Saints Michael and John, built in 1813 and now used as a theatre.[2]

The Irish Times reported in 2009 that archaeologists had discovered artefacts and part of the original Smock Alley theatre in Temple Bar, including walls from the 1662 building and later buildings.[3]

TheJournal.ie reported in 2018 that Smock Alley first opened in 1662 as a Theatre Royal under King Charles II, operated as a theatre until 1787, and reopened in 2012 after an archaeological dig.[4]
