🏭 Heritage-listed building

NIAH building record

Built: c.1740 · NIAH rating: Regional

This public house forms a dramatic impression on the street, with a vigorous ground floor pubfront attributed to J.J. O'Callaghan. The use of carved limestone and polished granite provides a pleasing contrast with the red brick to the upper floors and neighbouring buildings. Its execution is testament to the high level of craftsmanship in the Victorian period. It retains some historic interior fabric. This building may date to the mid-eighteenth century, possibly having been refaced in the nineteenth century.

Listing historyMusic history

Revenue's renewed-liquor-licence register lists licence ref S0120 as a Publican's Licence (7-Day Ordinary) for WHELANS at 23, 24 and 25 Camden Street and 40 Camden Row in Dublin city, with WHELANS LIVE DAC as licensee.[1]

The Irish Times wrote in 2000 that actor and businessman Gary Whelan had transformed Burke's traditional Dublin bar on Wexford Street into Whelan's music venue about ten years earlier.[2]

The Irish Times reported that about 400 people attended Ed Sheeran's 2015 VH1 Storytellers gig at Whelan's and that Sheeran chose the venue after seeing Damien Rice play there.[3]

The Irish Times reported that Arcade Fire gave a secret acoustic performance at Whelan's in 2017 after performing at Malahide Castle.[4]
