Tom Crean and the South Pole Inn

The South Pole Inn is one of Ireland's clearest pub-history pages. Tom Crean, the Annascaul-born Antarctic explorer, returned to Kerry after his naval and expedition career and operated a licensed premises in the village.

A dedicated Tom Crean history source records that Crean had a licence from 1917 and rebuilt the premises in 1929 as the South Pole Inn after the older building suffered from flooding. The name connected the Annascaul pub directly to Crean's polar life, and the premises later became a visitor point for Tom Crean memory.

Crean died in 1938. The same source records that the licence passed to his wife Nell, who ran the South Pole Inn until selling it in 1948. Current visitor sources should be checked before travel, as recent listings have indicated closure or vacancy.
