Revenue's renewed-liquor-licence register lists licence ref N1205 as a Publican's Licence (ordinary) - Theatre for ABBEY THEATRE\PEACOCK THEATRE at 26 LOWER ABBEY STREET in DUBLIN CITY with ABBEY THEATRE AMHARCLANN NA MAINISTREACH as licensee.[1]
The Irish Times reported that Anne Horniman bought property on Lower Abbey Street, enabling W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory to establish the Abbey Theatre, which opened on 1904-12-27 and later became the National Theatre of Ireland.[2] The same report said the old Abbey Theatre burnt down in 1951 and a new theatre opened in 1966.[2] In 2007, The Irish Times wrote that the current Abbey building took 15 years from 1951 to 1966, and that a 1994 preliminary study had highlighted lack of disabled access to the Peacock, acoustic problems, worn mechanical and electrical plant, outdated stage equipment, and poor fire safety.[3] A 2021 Oireachtas committee transcript said Dublin City Council's recent CPOs included the Abbey Street Lower-Abbey Theatre redevelopment.[4]
