Characterized by multiple gables and oriel windows, this elaborate commercial building was constructed as a retail outlet and offices to the design of George P. Sheridan (1865-1950). The impressive façade extends along Nos. 4-5 Church Lane and dramatically terminates the vista from St. Andrew Street. The original leaded timber casements are retained, with the elaborate gabled oriel to the corner being particularly noteworthy. Revenue's renewed-liquor-licence register lists licence ref S0112 as a Publican's Licence (7-Day Ordinary) for O'NEILLS at 1/2 Suffolk Street and 2A and 3/4 Church Lane in Dublin city, with MICHAEL O'NEILL LIMITED as licensee.[1]

The Irish Times identified O'Neills of Suffolk Street as one of Dublin's most famous pubs in 2008.[2]

The same Irish Times report said O'Neills hosted a ballot for Democrats Abroad Ireland during the 2008 Global Democratic Primary between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.[2]
