Revenue's renewed-liquor-licence register lists licence ref S0135 as a Publican's Licence (ordinary) - Theatre for THE GAIETY THEATRE at SOUTH KING STREET in DUBLIN CITY with GAIETY THEATRE UNLIMITED COMPANY as licensee.[1]

The Irish Times reported in 1997 that Lisney was seeking a buyer for the Gaiety Theatre at South King Street, that the listed building had a 1,200-seat capacity, and that it first opened in 1871.[2] A 2003 Irish Times feature said John Gunn founded the Gaiety Theatre in 1871, that the theatre had been remade in the 1890s by Frank Matcham, and that it had been a Grade I listed building since 1980 with the designation protecting its use as a theatre.[3] The same 2003 feature reported that some EUR2.2 million of theatre profits had been invested in a refurbishment and that the Gaiety reopened after a five-week break.[3] Irish Times coverage in 2013 reported that President Michael D. Higgins attended the European premiere of Once at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin.[4]
